Take a Dip into a Lake Filled with Jellyfish, Worry-Free!

Palau has a very special lake like no other, not for its water or surroundings, but for what is inside that lake. Let us ask you this, if given the opportunity, would you jump in a water full of jellyfish? Obviously not? What if those jellyfish were completely harmless and you could actually snorkel amongst them? We are sure all you adventure seekers are thinking ‘hell yes!’.

You Swim With Fish, I Swim With Jellyfish In the middle of Eil Malk island in Palau, you can find a lake filled with spectacular, golden-orange jellyfish, 700,000 to be exact! Although there used to be around 30 million, (but we’ll get to that part later) it is pretty mind blowing that you can not only get up close and personal, but even touch the magnificent creatures without getting hurt, as the jellyfish happen to be completely harmless! This underwater experience is so unique that it must be seen to be believed.

How Can I Swim With Jellyfish and Make It Out Alive? Let’s slow down and explain as those jellyfish are far from ordinary. The Eil Malk lake is actually a seawater lake, and those jellyfish got trapped and cut off from the ocean 12,000 years ago when the sea level had risen to the point where it filled the basin. The jellyfish have formed a symboition relationship with the lake’s abundant algae, zooxanthellae, which is absorbed into the jellyfish and allows them to grow. Furthermore, since they feed off the algae, and with no predators on sight, they have lost their stingers over the years, which is why they are now completely harmless.

What is also unique about these golden-orange jellyfish, is that unlike other ‘common’ jellyfish who swim aimlessly, this species migrates across the lake every day, following the arc of the sun.

If you are considering paying the Eil Malk lake a visit, make sure to be extra cautious when entering the waters as there has been a significant decrease in the jellyfish, from 30million to 700,000 due to human-related causes.

Dive into an Extraordinary Experience or Feel Like a Part of the Jellyfish Crew There is simply nothing like it anywhere else in the world. As soon as you step into the green and salty lake, you are completely surrounded by the unique, golden-orange creatures swimming in a graceful rhythm everywhere you look. It feels like time has stopped and for a while it is only you, and the jellyfish, thousands of them. With their translucent skin glowing under the sunlight as they dance around you effortlessly, with every single one looking completely identical, it is almost hypnotic to observe these spectacular creatures.

If you are considering paying the Eil Malk lake a visit, make sure to be extra cautious when entering the waters as there has been a significant decrease in the jellyfish, from 30million to 700,000 due to human-related causes.
